Interesting Facts – Agriculture was the foundation of the Ancient Greek economy and nearly 80% of the population was involved in this activity. During the early part of Greek history agriculture was based on cereals, such as barley, Durum wheat and, less commonly, millet or common wheat. Their value at the time was very small (you could buy a gum at the time – now however has a greater value (real and sentimental)

Interesting Facts – The 20 drachma coin has been issued for 1976-1978-1980-1982- 1984-1984-1988.For the 1982 issue, three Varieties exist as to the number of flutings and reedings in the columns of the Temple.In order of rareness these varieties are:

Four Flutings and Five Reedings
Seven Flutings and Eight Reedings

Interesting Facts – 2 Varieties exist (Kongsberg and Berne Mint) Some of the main differences are: On Berne Mint the Engraver’s initials are below epaulette, the edge lettering is small, the details overall are finer while the hair on Anne Marie forehead are shown lower. On the Kongsberg mint , engraver’s initials ΒΦ are on top of shoulder, the digits 1,6,4 on date are smaller,the letter Δ on Δρχ is thinner and the eagle’s details are not so sharp.

Interesting Facts –  Vasos Falireas was born in Athens (1905). He studied painting from 1924 to 1929 at the Athens Fine Arts School with teachers such as Georgios Iakovidis and Thomas Thomopoulos. In 1930 he left for Paris and until 1935 he worked close with the famous sculptors Charled Despiau and Aristide Maillol. He won the gold medal in the International Art Exhibition for his work of art “Galini” (1936). Many of his works were ruined during World War II. He died in the 8th of October 1979

Interesting Facts –  Georgios Karaiskakis (1782 – 1827) grew up in poverty and was forced to the mountains as kleftis. He was one of the first to take part in the Greek revolution to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire and his military genius became apparent during the last years of the struggle. He was appointed by the first Greek government as chief marshal of Eastern Greece and made Elefsina as his headquarters. He was killed in a clash with the Turks at Faliro, but he is considered the second most important military figure of the revolution, after Kolokotronis

Interesting Facts –  Democritus (460 – 370 BC) was a Greek philosopher, who developed the atomic theory of the universe, which had been originated by his mentor, the philosopher Leucippus. Democritus was born in Abdera, Thrace. He wrote extensively, but only fragments of his works remain. According to his exposition of the atomic theory of matter, all things are composed of minute, invisible, indestructible particles of pure matter (atoma, “indivisibles”), which move about eternally in infinite empty space (kenon, “the void”)
